Chapter Thirty-Six
It Must Be An Upper-Class Thing
Back in the car, my phone began to ring. The Mustang answered for me. What a car.
âHoney?â
âWhatâs up? Howâs Sarah?â
âStill out of it,â he said. âBut I talked to the person who found her. Apparently they saw a dark green van in the area.â
I frowned. âI saw a dark van near my house last night. That was probably the person who shot at me.â
âThe person who what?â
Timâs voice was hard, like he wanted to yell but was holding it inside. I bet if I could see his face his fangs would be out.
âYou didnât know?â I asked. âI thought you knew.â
âWhy would you think Iâd magically know that?â
âAdam knew. I just figured he would have told you.â
âHe didnât.â
âYeah, I kind of guessed.â
âYouâre in your car now.â
âYes,â I said suspiciously. âHow do you know?â
âFirstly, because I can hear the engine and Iâm not an idiot. Secondly, weâre tracking your carâs GPS. Make sure you keep an eye out and call it in if you spot the van.â
âWho do I call?â
âMe. Please just donât do anything stupid.â
âSure,â I said in what I doubted was a convincing tone.
âPlease.â
I was feeling a little calmer after talking to Will. I mean, sure, there was a very experienced assassin after me and I had no idea who they were and yeah, they could kill me at any time, but hey â James hadnât done it. I was still in with a chance of winning a house, however slim.
I cruised in silence for a while, not really driving anywhere in particular, until my phone rang again.
âCharlie? Itâs Jo.â
âHey, Jo.â How did she get this number? I hadnât planned on telling her I had a phone, um, ever.
âWere you ever planning on telling me you got a phone?â Uh⦠âNot that it matters. Your mum gave me the number so now you canât avoid me.â She cackled. âI canât believe you waited until your work got one for you. Hello twenty-first century. Actually, hello twentieth century. You are so behind the times.â
OK, was there some way I could get my car to block certain peopleâs numbers? Because as much as I loved Jo, this was actually going to drive me crazy.
âI didnât realise people were so hot to talk to me.â
âSure, whatever. Iâm just ringing to remind you that my dinner party is tonight and you promised, like one hundred percent promised, that you would come.â
Pretty sure that was a lie, but whatever.
âLea is already here â your mum dropped her off. Theyâve both told me youâre dressed like a country hobo, so go home and get changed. It starts in an hour but I donât mind if you turn up late looking hot because I have invited three potential suitors for you and you are going to love all three of them and youâre not going to be able to choose and youâre just going to have penis coming at you from all directions and you wonât even know what to do with it.
